Matt Klohs has enjoyed a long and successful professional career as a woodwing multi-instrumentalist, conductor, composer and clinician since joining the Royal Australian Navy Band in 1991. He has held positions as Music Director of both full-time Navy Bands in Sydney and Melbourne as well as Assistant Director of Music-Navy. He was appointed as Difector of Music of Her Majesty’s Royal Marine Band Commando Training Centre in the UK for a period of 4 months in 2009 and is currently Second in Charge of the Defence Forse School of Music in Melbourne. his current role is one of mentor and training manager for the next generation of Australian Defence Force conductors.

Matt’s enthusiasm, passion, and positive approach to teaching and performing puts him in high demand both domestically and in the US where he has guest conducted with both university and high level community bands.  Next month he has been invited to conduct at Queensland Conservatorium’s State Honours Ensemble Probram being run in conjunction with the national conference ANBOC 2018. He is active in commissioning new works from both established and emerging composers with a strong focus on Australian music and diversity in repertoire.

This year has seen Matt attend the University of Texas Summer Conducting Symposium in Austin, TX. He is also undertaking the Master of Music Studies (Conducting) Postgraduate course of Sydney Conservatorium of Music under the tutelage of Dr Johm Lynch.

Matt has adjudicated at regional, state and national levels with musicians of all age groups and experience levels.  As an adjudicator, he focusses on positive reinforcement of good performance moments but has the ability to provide honest, appropriate and concise feedback where required for the growth of the musicians in the future.  For this reason, Matt continues to be invited to adjudicate throughout Australia and keeps a busy schedule. He is a member of ABODA Victoria and several other influental industry groups.

Demonstrating his commitment to community music, Matt is a committee member of the Band Association of New South Wales and is their delegate to the National Bands Council of Australia.  He is a published composer and recently enjoyed both Australian and US premieres of his new majoy work, “Dylan’s Song: and we walked between raindrops”.  Matt is currently working on a commissioned work for Columbia University as part of a New York-based consortium.  He is also a founding Director of Australia’s newest and most exciting company Maestros with a Mission Pty Ltd, joining with other experienced professional colleagues to provide boutique pring music publishing, leadership and professional development services to Australian ensembles and conductors.
